Privacy Policy

trill is a personal study tool. What you record is yours alone. This policy explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • trill only listens after you press Start.
  • What you record is only yours. There are no sharing features, and no other user can see your recordings, transcripts or notes.
  • Full recordings are kept for 30 days. After that we keep only short clips of the sentences you study.
  • Audio recorded in the iOS app and your shadowing practice takes stay on your device.
  • We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use your content to train AI models.

Who we are

trill is operated by Chih-Hsuan Mei, a sole proprietor (“trill”, “we”, “us”), who is responsible for your personal data. This policy covers trill.ing, app.trill.ing, the trill Chrome extension, the trill iOS app and the trill desktop app. Contact us anytime at [email protected].

What we collect

  • Account details. Your email address, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google or Apple. Your languages, level and settings.
  • What you record (web app, desktop app, Chrome extension). Audio from the tab or screen you choose, and your microphone only if you turn it on. On Netflix and YouTube, the subtitle lines that played while you recorded. The page’s title, the show or channel, the episode and the page address, so you can find your way back.
  • What you record (iOS app). Audio from your iPhone’s microphone. It is stored only on your phone; while you record, it is streamed to our speech-to-text provider to make the transcript.
  • What trill makes for you. Transcripts, translations, study material, the notes you write during a session, your collections and the cover images you upload, flashcard progress, and the words and grammar you mark as known.
  • Practice. Sentences you write in grammar practice are sent to our AI provider for feedback. Your shadowing voice takes never leave your device.
  • Billing. Your plan, subscription status and a customer ID. Stripe or Apple handle your payment details; we never see your full card number.
  • Usage and technical data. How many sessions and minutes you’ve used, to apply your plan’s limits. Basic request data such as IP address and browser type, which our hosting provider processes to deliver and secure the Service. Page-view counts from Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn’t track you across sites.
  • Support. Your email address and anything you tell us when you contact us.

The Chrome extension also keeps a list of the sites you’ve recorded on. That list stays in your browser and is never sent to us.

How we use it

  • To run trill: transcribe your recordings, create study material, and keep your library in sync across your devices.
  • To manage your account and plan: sign-in emails, billing and usage limits.
  • To answer your questions and support requests.
  • To keep trill secure and prevent abuse.
  • To improve trill, using aggregate counts such as how many sessions are recorded, not by reading your content.

AI and model training

We don’t use your content to train AI models. To transcribe audio and generate study material, we send it to the providers listed below. They process it only to return results to us, don’t use it to train their models, and may keep it for a limited time to operate and secure their services, as their terms describe.

Who can see your data

Only you. trill has no sharing features, public profiles or team workspaces, and our database only returns your content to your account. Family sharing on Maestro shares the plan, not content.

One exception to be aware of: cover images you upload for a collection are stored at a long, unguessable link so they load quickly. Anyone who has that exact link could open the image, so don’t use private photos as covers.

We access your content only to help with a support request you send us, to keep the Service secure, or when the law requires it. We don’t sell your personal data or share it for advertising. We may disclose data if the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or as part of a sale or transfer of trill, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your data.

Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run trill. They may use your data only to provide their service to us. See the full list on our Subprocessors page.

How long we keep it

  • Full recordings (web app, desktop app, Chrome extension): 30 days from when you record. Then we keep only short clips of the sentences you study (your shadowing deck and the lines your vocabulary, grammar and expressions come from) and delete the full recording.
  • Transcripts, notes, study material and clips: until you delete the session or your account.
  • iOS recordings: on your phone, until you delete the session or the app.
  • Deleting a session removes its transcript, study material and audio from our servers right away. Copies in our providers’ backups are overwritten on their regular schedule.
  • Deleting your account: email [email protected] from the address you sign in with. We delete your account and its data within 30 days, except billing records we must keep for tax and accounting.

Your rights and choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to access, export, correct or delete your personal data, or ask how it’s used. Email [email protected] and we’ll respond within 30 days. You can delete sessions yourself in the app at any time.

EEA and UK. We process your data to provide the Service you signed up for (contract), to keep it secure and improve it (legitimate interests), to meet legal duties, and with your consent where needed, such as microphone access. You can also object to or restrict processing, and complain to your local data protection authority.

California. We don’t sell or “share” personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we won’t treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.

Cookies and local storage

trill uses no advertising or tracking cookies. The web app and extension keep your sign-in session in your browser’s local storage. Our page analytics are cookieless. Fonts load from Google Fonts, which sees your IP address. Stripe’s checkout pages may set their own cookies to process payments and prevent fraud.

Security

Data travels over HTTPS and is encrypted at rest by our providers, and access is restricted so each account can only reach its own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect yours, and we’ll notify you if a breach affects your data as the law requires.

International transfers

trill is run from the United States, and our providers process data in the United States, the European Union and other countries. Where the law requires it, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

Children

trill isn’t for children under 13, or under the minimum age for digital consent where they live. We don’t knowingly collect their data; if you think a child has given us data, email [email protected] and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

We’ll post any update here and change the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we handle your data, we’ll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
